A long weekend sounds great until everyone on the team asks for the same Friday off. Planning annual leave for 2027 early gives you time to work through clashes before they affect customer enquiries, projects or month-end work.

Here are three useful leave periods in Germany for 2027, followed by a practical way to agree requests and arrange cover.

## Three 2027 holiday periods worth discussing early

Easter, Ascension Day and Pentecost offer useful opportunities for a longer break. These examples assume Monday-to-Friday work, weekends off and the named public holidays off. For part-time work or shifts, use each person’s actual working days.

| Occasion | Continuous time off | Leave to request | Leave days | Calendar days off |
|---|---|---|--:|--:|
| Easter | 26 March–4 April 2027 | 30 March–2 April | 4 | 10 |
| Ascension Day | 6–9 May 2027 | 7 May | 1 | 4 |
| Pentecost | 15–23 May 2027 | 18–21 May | 4 | 9 |

For example, Ascension Day falls on Thursday 6 May 2027. With approved leave on Friday 7 May, someone working this pattern can have four consecutive days off. That makes Friday a useful date to discuss well before requests pile up.

The holiday dates appear in the [official Berlin calendar](https://www.berlin.de/tourismus/infos/1887651-1721039-feiertage-schulferien.html). Check any additional regional holidays against the relevant state calendar. These are planning examples, not automatic approvals.

## Check both school-year calendars

To cover the whole of 2027, consult **2026/2027 and 2027/2028**. Germany’s [Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs](https://www.kmk.org/service/ferienregelung.html) publishes school holiday dates by federal state.

Ask which school holiday periods matter for your team’s planning. If colleagues work in different states, keep those dates separate. You can identify overlapping preferences without adding private family details to the shared calendar.

## Collect preferences, then work out cover

Before collecting requests, check leave entitlements, usual working days and available balances. Part-time patterns need their own calculation; headcount alone does not tell you how much cover is available.

Agree a date for collecting initial preferences. Treat it as a planning step rather than an automatic rejection of later requests. Make the difference between a preference, a submitted request and approved leave clear to everyone.

When arranging cover, start with responsibilities. Two people being away from a team of ten might be fine. If they are the only people who can run invoicing, there is still a gap.

| Example period | Responsibility | Question to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 7 May 2027 | Client approvals | Who can make the necessary decisions? |
| A week during summer school holidays | Month-end reporting | Does the person covering have the knowledge and access? |
| The week before a project launch | Customer handover | Who knows the current position? |

These are hypothetical situations. A cover plan helps the discussion, but does not replace assessment of each leave request.

Before planning the new year, reconcile any unused 2026 leave and the associated requests. The [year-end unused-leave checklist](https://minutezilla.com/en/unused-annual-leave-year-end-germany/) helps you review account balances, individual communications and possible carry-over separately.

## What if several people want the same dates?

Discuss the actual gap. Which task would be uncovered? Could you bring a handover forward or train another colleague? Working through responsibilities can reveal options that a blanket limit on absences would miss.

The applicable legal rules still govern the decision. [Section 7(1) of Germany’s Federal Leave Act](https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/burlg/__7.html) requires consideration of employee preferences, subject to urgent operational concerns and other employees’ preferences that take priority on social grounds. A first-come-first-served rule does not replace that assessment.

Keep a clear record of the outcome. Personal explanations do not belong in a calendar visible to the whole team. Dates, approval status and the colleague providing cover will usually be enough for everyday coordination.

## Your team holiday planning checklist

- Check each person’s working days, work location and leave entitlement.
- Add applicable public holidays and relevant school holidays.
- Agree a date for collecting initial preferences.
- Discuss Easter, 7 May, Pentecost and summer early.
- Mark essential work and fixed customer commitments.
- Agree cover and arrange the necessary access.
- Respond to requests and clearly mark approved dates.
- Hand over open tasks, deadlines and contacts before leave starts.
- Review pending requests and changes once a month.

A handover does not need to be long. The person providing cover needs to know what is open, when it is due and where to find the information. Keep passwords out of leave notes and arrange access in advance.

## Keep requests and decisions together

In Minutezilla, team members can request leave and view their own balance. Admins and managers can approve or reject requests, and the requester receives a notification about the decision. Your team still agrees who will cover the work.

If requests currently live across messages and separate spreadsheets, a shared process can make them easier to follow. [Try Minutezilla in your browser](https://app.minutezilla.com/register) and start with the leave allowances and approval responsibilities your team needs.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which German bridge day gives four days off for one leave day in 2027?

For someone working Monday to Friday with the holiday off, approved leave on Friday 7 May creates a four-day break from 6 to 9 May, including Ascension Day and the weekend.

### Should everyone book their entire year’s leave immediately?

Start by collecting important preferences and identifying likely gaps in cover. Any binding rules depend on the circumstances and applicable requirements. An internal planning date is not the same as a statutory cut-off.

### How do the examples work for part-time colleagues?

Use the individual’s actual working days. The examples above assume five working days from Monday to Friday, so they cannot be applied unchanged to every work pattern.

### What should the shared leave plan show?

Keep it to information the team needs for coordination, such as dates, approval status and cover. Leave private explanations and medical information out of the general plan.
